NYC Travel Itinerary – Day 1

Travel

Before we get into the actual activities, I just wanted to mention travel. I would defintely recommend an afternoon flight if possible, or whatever will get you to NY early evening from your home destination. This way, you still get to enjoy some of the first day (rather than spend it all travelling and go straight to bed). We also find it way easier to stay up a little bit extra when you’re excited to be somewhere, and doing this meant we avoided jet lag for the rest of the trip 👌. Now let’s get into the actual NYC travel itinerary!

Don’t get a taxi! JFK has its own air train and then you can get straight on the subway and off pretty much anywhere you need to be in the city. It’s super quick and less than $15. We purposely got off the subway a couple of blocks away so we could have a little walk and stop off and get a drink somewhere on the way to the hotel. Although expect to pay at least double price if you’re near Times Square (I think it’s worth it for a few drinks when you arrive just for the experience!) Go a few blocks out for cheaper drinks. 🥡

Food

For dinner we had the lamb cumin noodles from Xian Famous Foods 🍜. These were one of Anthony Bourdain’s favourites for a reason! Don’t go too spicy cause medium is spicy enough, trust me (and I like v. spicy food!!) 🌶️ 🍺🌭 You can sit in here if you like but it’s not a restaurant as such. More of a little fast food kinda space. Bear in mind that it closes earlier than most other restaurants though, as it has more of a food-to-go vibe. We took ours and sat on the steps in Times Square to eat, which was messy but pretty fun. Take extra napkins!

Drinks

Hells Kitchen is walking distance from Times Square and great for drinks if you are staying central. Faves are The Waylon – a western sports/dive bar. But my favourite (and actually my fave bar of all time) is Rudys. Famous for $3 beers and free hotdogs 👏!

Hotel 🏩

We stayed near Times Square for 3 days at Hotel Edison. Located in the heart of the Theater District, super close to Broadway, Hotel Edison Hotel is an original art deco hotel. It’s also famous for being in a bunch of classic great movies 🎥 ! You can enjoy live jazz at the Edison Rum House (chosen by Eater as one of the best hotel bars in New York City), dine at Friedman’s, offering delicious comfort food during the day and dinner served by singing performers. Or try Bond 45, their iconic Italian restaurant that also offers nightly Stand-Up NY comedy shows. The hotel also offers free walking tours and wine hours in their restored 1931 lobby, which is such a nice touch! This was the perfect destination to be central for the first few days of our trip.

Let us know if you have any questions, and stay tuned for day 2!
